Day 1: So Italian Catholics in Florence are similar to Southern Baptists in Alabama in that nothing is open on Sundays, no one leaves their homes until after 1:00PM except for church (of course) and all of the markets that sell wine are closed. Amazing from many miles away I am home again! Florence is so different from Rome. The architecture alone screams Tuscany and the food is hearty. These people are eaters! Again, like I am at home again! We went to the Basilica di Santa Croce which holds the bones of Michelangelo, Galileo, and some really important Nun whose bones you can still see as they are in a glass box. Interesting. Next we visited some of the government buildings/museums at the Palazzo Vecchio which was so interesting because they dedicated each room to mythological gods, a huge change from all the religiousness in other buildings. Florentine art work is very fine and with lots of detail = Renaissance style. Also, these people like to talk about how many times their city has been conquered and they still bounce back. Ah, Italy. We met a couple from the states today walking in and out of every restaurant in the area asking if they were going to be showing the Super Bowl. No is the answer. After asking what I can only assume to be many times they were still surprised by the answer. Pictures below.
